Q

What is a fight or flight experience?

A

It is when your brain has a split decision to either fight or back off , this increases supply of oxygen and glucose to cells.

When It detects a stressful situation the brain sends signals to the adrenal glands , which secrete adrenaline .

Q

What happens when adrenaline is released into the blood?

A

Adrenaline binds to specific receptors in the heart, causes blood pressure and heart rate to increase.
This increases blood to muscles , so cells get more oxygen and glucose
Adrenaline also binds to liver , this causes the liver to break down glucose in its glycogen stores to release glucose .
This causes increased blood glucose levels, so there is more glucose for possible fighting.

Q

What happens when thyroxine levels are too high and low?

A

High = thyrotropin releasing hormone(TRH) from the hypothalamus is inhibited, reduces thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) - reducing thyroxine in blood

Low = hypothalamus releases TRH , this then release TSH from the pituitary gland. This causes thyroid gland release thyroxine - thyroxine levels increase.
