Additional factors affecting the skeletal system Flashcards
What is arthritis?
A condition where there is an inflammation within a synovial joint, causing pain and stiffness in the joint. Caused by general wear and tear over a long period of time. Reduces the normal amount of cartilage tissue which may result in the ends of bones rubbing together.
What is osteoporosis?
The weakening of bones caused by a loss in calcium or lack of vitamin D. As you get older your bones slowly lose their mineral density and naturally become brittle, fragile and more likely to break under stress.
How does age affect the skeletal system?
The skeletal system is a living tissue that is constantly growing and repairing itself so that it can provide support and protection. Resistance training (weight training) can cause more harm good. The reason for this is that a child’s bones are still growing and putting too much force on the can damage the epiphyseal plates that are found at the end of each long bone. Can lead to stunted growth.
