Adaptations of the skeletal system to exercise - long term Flashcards
1
Q
How do bones increase in density and strength?
A
Regular weight bearing exercise results in bones becoming bigger and stronger. The mechanical stress on the bones causes the harder outer layer of the boned to harden and get stronger. Microtraumas cause this.
This means that you are less likely to get injured such as a fracture.
2
Q
How do ligaments increase in strength?
A
Regular exercise strengthens ligaments. This stabilises the joint so it is less likely to get injured such as a dislocation
3
Q
How does the thickness of articular cartilage increase?
A
Regular exercise will thicken the articular cartilage, this will protect the joint from wear and tear.
