Addiction: Theories of Behaviour Change: Prochaska Flashcards
What does this model attempt to explain
The process of how individuals overcome an addiction
What type of model is it?
Cyclical
What is meant by a cyclical model?
the process of overcoming an addiction is a cycle
What type of approach does this model take?
a positive and dynamic approach
Why does this model take a positive and dynamic approach to addiction?
because it acknowledges the difficulty of giving up and addiction as well as the possibility of relapse
What does the model recognise about people?
How people differ in how ready they are to give up their addiction
What does the model recognise about treating addiction?
How the treatment will depend on the stage an individual is at
How many stages are there?
6
Name all 6 stages
Pre contemplation
Contemplation
Preparation
Action
Maintenance
Termination
What is meant by Pre contemplation?
The individual does into consider themselves as having a problem and doesnt want to change
What is the stage where the individual isnt considering change or wanting to change?
Pre contemplation stage
If in the precontemplation stage, the client doesnt want to change their behaviour, What effective intervention can we put in place?
Help the client to consider the benefits or need to change
What statements might an individual in the pre contemplation stage say to themselves?
ignorance is bliss
I’m okay right now
Nothing is wrong
What is meant by contemplation?
The individual is THINKING about changing their behaviour. they are aware of the Pros and con’s of changing
What potential pro might a client in the contemplation stage be considering?
Better for my health
Can save money
Won’t impact my family
What potential con might a client in the contemplation stage be considering?
Giving up will not be enjoyable
Withdrawal symptoms
Negative feelings will come back i.e. stress
All my friends/ Family do it?
How will i socialise?
What is the stage where the client weighs up the pros and cons of changing their behaviour?
Contemplation
What effective intervention can we put in place during the contemplation stage to help the client in their decision to change?
Help them weigh up the pro’s and cons of quitting.
What intervention would not be suitable at the contemplation stage?
Drug therapy
Why would drug therapy not be an effective intervention in the contemplation stage?
They are only thinking about the decision they haven’t put any plans in place
What statements might an individual in the contemplation stage say to themselves?
i will start tomorrow
What is meant by the preparation stage of Prochaska’s model of behaviour change?
Where the client believe the benefits of quitting the addiction outweigh the costs of continuing the addiction.
During the preparation stage, what happens?
individual decides to change within the next month to change but don’t know how
What effective intervention could we use to help the client prepare to change their behaviour?
We could construct a plan for change
Give an example of how we might create a plan to change?
Making a GP appointment
Calling helplines
Cancel memberships
Removing the addictive substance
What statements might an individual in the preparation stage say to themselves?
OK I’m ready for this
I’m changing next month so need to plan
What is the action stage of Prochaskas model of behaviour change?
The plan made in the preparation stage is put into place
What usually occurs in this stage
They have made a significant decision to change their behaviour i.e., going to a behavioural/cognitive therapist.
What effective intervention could we put in place to help individuals in the action stage?
Develop coping strategies to help them maintain their behaviour change
What statements might an individual in the action stage say to themselves?
I have stopped
lets do this!
i am motivated to change
What is meant by the maintenance stage?
the individual has kept up their behaviour change for more than 6 months
During the maintenance stage, what does the individual do focus on to keep up their behaviour change?
They focus on relapse prevention such as avoiding situations where their addiction might be triggered.
What is meant by relapse prevention?
strategies to help an individual stay away from their addictive substance/behaviour
What is a potential issue with the maintenance stage?
it is a lengthy process and the individual needs to keep focussed on their long term goal of termination
What effective intervention may we put in place to help an individual in the maintenance stage?
applying the coping strategies they learnt in the action stage and use sources of support
What statements may an individual in the maintenance stage say to themselves?
I have kept up this change!
Stay on track
I have still stopped
What is the final stage of Prochaska’s model of behaviour change?
Termination
What is meant by Termination?
Newly acquired behaviours have come automatic/ apart of the individuals routine
During termination, how does the individual feel?
they are no longer turning to their addictive substance/behaviour to cope and are confident that they can resist
What does the termination stage consider about addiction?
That this stage may not be possible for everyone
If an individual is not able to reach the termination stage, what must they consider?
that prolonged maintenance maybe the goal and that relapse is possible
What can we do for an individual who is struggling to get to the termination stage?
Provide skills to work through the earlier stages of the process quickly
What statements might an individual say to themselves if they are successful in termination?
i will never go back to how i was
i will never______ again
I’m not going back
How is relapse viewed in this model?
it is not considered as a failure and it can occur at any time
What happens if an individual does unfortunately relapse?
They will return to earlier stages of contemplation and preparation and start the cycle again.
What stage is Signourney at?
Maintenance stage
What does the model predict could happen if she relapses?
If she relapses, the model suggests that Sigourney would return to an earlier stage in the process. For example, this could be precontemplation (if she denies her smoking is a problem), or perhaps action (if she take steps to give up cigarettes again).
How could Sigourney be helped?
The aim of intervention is to reduce as much as possible the impact of relapse by helping the individual return to maintenance as quickly as possible. Sigourney might need support in developing other coping skills (or applying the ones she has) to achieve this.
