Addiction
compulsive use and need for a habit-forming substance. A person with an addiction has built up a tolerance and experiences symptoms of withdrawal
Denial
a defense mechanism in which a problem or reality is avoided by refusal to admit or acknowledge existence of said problem or reality
Tolerance
capacity of the body to endure and become less responsive to a substance due to repeated use/exposure
Binge
excessive and compulsive consumption
Cold Turkey
abruptly stopping the use of an addictive substance
Predisposition
tendency to a condition or quality based on genetics and environmental factors
Trigger
something that initiates a reaction for an addict to continue using
Brain Chemistry
changes in the amounts of various chemicals to the central nervous system
In Recovery
when an addict returns to a former or better condition
Abstinence
the act of refraining from indulging in a desire
Codependency
excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a substance or partner
Enabler
one who encourages or allows somebody to participate in self-destructive behavior by making excuses and/or making it possible for them to avoid the consequences of said behavior
Relapse
the act of backsliding/recurrence of symptoms after a period of improvement
Withdrawal
painful psychological and physical symptoms that occur when one discontinues the use of an addictive drug
Will Power
the strength of will to carry out ones own decisions, plans, and wishes (ability to control oneself and determine their own actions)
