What are Febrile Convulsions?
Seizures due to a fever in an otherwise well child

What are some features of a febrile convulsion?
Brief, <5m
Tonic Clonic seizure
Usually early in a viral infection due to the rapid temperature rise
What subtypes of febrile convulsion are there?
Simple
Vomplex
Febrile Status Epilepticus
How does a simple febrile convulsion present?
<15mins
Generalised
No recurrence within 24h
Complete recovery within 1h
How does a complex febrile convulsion present?
15-30 mins
Focal seizure
May have repeat seizures within 24h
How does Febrile Status Epilepticus present?
Seizure greater than 30 mins duration
What is the recommended management for a first incidence of Febrile Convlusion?
Referral to paeds
What is the risk of a child developing another febrile convulsion after the first episode?
1 in 3
What are risk facotrs for developing recurrent febrile seizures?
Age <18m
Fever <39 degrees
Shorter duration of fever before seizures
FHx
What information should parents of a child presenting with a first episode of febrile seizure be given?
If it reoccurs, phone for an ambulance if seizure lasts > 5 mins
