- Cough and sputum
- Viral

Supportive management

When to consult GP for acute bronchitis (6)?
A
- Cough severe or > 3 weeks
- Fever for > 3 days
- Haemoptysis
- Underlying heart/lung condition
- Increasing SOB
- Repeated episodes of bronchitis -> chronic bronchitis? COPD?

What is Bronchiectasis
A
Abnormal dilatation of distal bronchi
May be exacerbated by infection

Risk factors for bronchiectasis (5)
A
- Childhood infection (pertussis, pneumonia)
- CF
- Ciliary dyskinesia
- Hypogammaglobulinemia
- Allergic broncho pulmonary aspergillosis

Symptoms of bronchiectasis (4)
A
- Chronic productive cough
- SOB
- Recurrent LRTI
- Haemoptysis

Signs of bronchiectasis (5)
A
- Finger clubbing
- Coarse crackles – Bilaterally
- Wheeze
- Obstructive spirometry
- Signet ring sign on CXR – bronchus larger than accompanying vessel

Investigations for bronchiectasis
A
- sputum culture (typicals + AAFB)
- CXR

Management of bronchiectasis
A
- Mucolytics (make mucus less thick and sticky)
- Prolonged antibiotics 10-14 days
- Vaccines (flu + pneumococcal)
- Consider prophylactic Abx- AZYTHROMCYIN
