Group Areas Act 1950
The races are to be separate and live in different areas
Suppression of Communism Act 1950
Banned supporters of Communism and anyone defying Apartheid laws
Bantu Authorities Act 1951
‘Tribal Authorities’ were created in African reserves. 13% of SA land. SA gov appointed local chiefs; step towards exclusion.
Native Laws Amendment Act 1951
Undesirable natives will be removed from the town to the Reserves
Africans seeking employment in white areas had to register with the government labour office, it was made illegal for Africans to be in towns and cities for longer than 72 hours. Unless they were born in the area. I lived there for 15 years had worked for the same employee for 10 years non-white who did not meet this criteria would be forcibly removed.
New Passes Law 1952
All africans living in towns and cities over 16 years old including woman had to carry a ‘reference book’. Included info, picture, fingerprints and details of your employer. Employer can record behaviour in the book. People have to show their book on demand. If black person was in a white area they would be fine and returned to their homeland.
Reservation of Separate Amenities 1953
Public spaces and services were to be separated along racial lines. Only roads were mixed
Bantu Education Act 1953
Gov removed funding for church and schools educating blacks. Schools either come under gov or receive no state funding.
- Black schools received less money
- Follow different curriculum from white
- Teach white superiority
- Would not continue education pass primary
Promotion of Bantu Self-Government Act 1959
Eight Bantustans - self governing homelands for blacks. Where to be created from the reserves, each band to Stan would be the homeland of an ethnic group.
Henrick Verwoerd (PM1958-66)
1. Wanted to create bantustans as part of his policy
2.Said that it will reduce racial frictions by giving blacks power
3.Said it was a process of the colonisation
4.SA gov spent lots of money on separate development
5.They put casinos, stadiums, airports and parliament buildings
6.HV was careful - built these ensuring nothing developed
7.Did not improve farming
8.Rulers earnt good money, everyone else was poor
9.Black South Africans continue to work + live outside the homeland because they didn’t have proper jobs.
10.Huge Township sprung up in front stand on the outskirts of white towns with workers migrating into the towns mainly for work. They still carried passbooks
11.Bantustans = overcrowded, poverty and disease.
