Act 3 Scene 1 Flashcards
Banquo says ‘I fear thou play’dst most foully for’t’
He’s becoming suspicious of the way Macbeth has became king
Banquo says ‘’king, Cawdor, glamis’
-all in the wrong order which could suggest how unnatural it is for Macbeth to be King and how it is disrupting the Great Chain of Being
Macbeth says ‘our fears in Banquo stick deep’
Macbeth expresses his strong concerns with banquo’s prophecy
Macbeth says ‘to be thus is nothing; but to be safely thus’
To Macbeth, being the king means nothing if he cannot be safe as the king; he wants to keep his power as long as possible. He sees Banquo as a threat.
This is the beginning of a tyranny.
Macbeth says ‘upon my head they placed a fruitless crown’
Macbeth regrets that his descendants will not “inherit” the throne, worrying that the “witches” have given him a “fruitless crown”
Macbeth says ‘to make them kings, the seeds of banquos kings!’
-almost as if Macbeth is trying to convince himself that the witches could have not possibly spoken the truth
Macbeth says ‘know banquo was your enemy’
-he is going against him now
