Act 1 Scene 4 Flashcards
Duncan says ‘is execution done on Cawdor’
-foreshadows death and downfall of Macbeth because the title was bestowed upon him
Macbeth says ‘stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires’
-conflict between light and dark, GOTHIC ELEMENT, suggesting conflict between evil and good within Macbeth
‘Stars’ (Duncan says this to macbeth)
-suggests he is a noble character but Macbeth is hiding the noble characteristics, displays to audience the degeneration of Macbeth into evil, thus the fatal flaw of Macbeth being his ambition
‘Deep Desires’ (Duncan says to Macbeth)
-advocates the evil inside is not his own but the work of ‘evil spirits’, could imply the witches have heavily influenced Macbeth as we can see this earlier when the first line Macbeth says is ‘so foul and fair a day I have not seen’, so he speaks similarly to the witches
‘Worthy banquo’
Duncan says that he is as important as Macbeth
