Gives outline of plot and what is going to happen in this act
Structure of prologue is a Shakespearean sonnet The 14 lines are long, divided into 3 quatrains and a rhyming couplet the rhyming pattern is (abab cdcd efef gg)

Act 1 scene 1
A
- a fight between montages and capulets - - setting :public street in Verona
WHAT HAPPENS? - Samspon and Gregory are Capulet servants , they boast and joke in the street
- Abraham and Balthasar, 2 Montague servants arrive, Capulet servants insult them to start a fight
- Benvolio arrives and stops fight
-Tybalt arrives and fughts Benvolio - officers come and citizen come to stop fight
- lords Capulet and Montague arrive and want to fight but their wives try to stop them
- Prince Escalus arrives , orders them to drop weapons , have been 3 street fight between the Cap and Mont if there is another fight they will be put to death ,want to see lord Mont and lord Cap at palace
- Benvolio explain to lord Mont how fight started
- lady Mont ask Benvolio if he knows where Romeo is, she thinks he’s sad , Benvolio will find out
- when Romeo arrives he tells Benvolio that he is in love with Rosaline , he is sad because she is not interested in him

Act 1 scene 2
A
- Lord Cap plans his party
- setting Capulets mansion
WHAT HAPPENS - Lord cap telling Paris that he and lord Mont have been ordered not to fight , they need to keep the peace
- Paris asks Lord cap if he can marry Juliet
- lord cap says that Juliet’s only 13, too young to marry .He suggest waiting for 2 years , he says that Juliet has to agree to the marriage
- lord cap invites paris to the party that night .he will see Juliet as well as other ladies with who to compare her too
-lord Cap gave his servant a list of people and tells him to invite them to the party but the servant can’t read so he asks for Romeo’s help to read out the names - Romeo sees Rosaline was invited to the party
- the servant says that if Romeo and Benvolio are not Montagues they can come to the party
- Benvolio tells Romeo that many ladies will be at the party band maybe Romeo will meet someone new

Act 1 scene 3
A
- lady Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris
- setting : Capulets mansion
WHAT HAPPENS? - lady cap tells nurse that Juliet is ready for marriage as it is only 2 weeks until her 14th birthday.The nurse remembers Juliet’s childhood well as she raised Juliet
- lady cap tells Juliet that Paris has asked for marriage and he would be an excellent husband
- Juliet says she will look at Paris and see if she finds him attractive

Act 1 scene 4
A
- Romeo and friends on their way to the party
- setting street outside the Capulet
mansion
WHAT HAPPENS? - Romeo and his friends chat on the way to the party, put on masks ,at balls/ parties people would wear masks so they could flirt without being recognized
- mercutio tells them the story of Mab(queen of fairies)who delivers dreams she can also bring nightmares, mercutio does thus to stop Romeo from feeling sad
- the theme of fate/destiny versus free will is stressed

A
- the Capulet party:Romeo meets Juliet
- setting:the hall in Capulets mansion
WHAT HAPPENS? - Lord Capulets servants prepare for the party
- lord cap welcomes his guests
- Romeo sees Juliet and is immediately attracted to her.He asks a servant if he knows who she is , the servant doesn’t
- Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin recognizes Romeo by his voice .He wants to fight him.Lord Cap stops him.He thinks romeo will not cause trouble and he doesn’t want fighting at his party
- romeo and Juliet express their love
- nurse interrupts them, Juliet’s mother wants to see her
- later romeo and juliet learn the terrible news from nurse that their families are enemies
