Acquired Disorders of Coagulation Flashcards
Name the 4 acquired disorders of coagulation:
Vitamin K deficiency, disseminated intravascular coagulation, coagulopathy of liver disease, acquired platelet disorders
What causes Vitamin K deficiency?
Dietary intake, poor absorption, chemotherapy
What role does Vitamin K play in clotting?
Vitamin K plays a role in forming the protein that forms Factors II, VII, IX, X
When is DIC most likely to occur?
During pregnancy or when someone has cancer - it is a secondary condition
What is the pathophyisiology of DIC?
The entire coagulation cascade gets activated. Micro clots form all over the place; these clots use up all of the platelets, fibrin, and fibrinogen, ironically, causing bleeding… so - bleeding and clotting are occurring at the same time.
Management of DIC?
Heparin will make worse - give platelets and/or plasma
What are the signs and symptoms of liver disease?
Like in DIC, clots form in the liver, using up clotting material from elsewhere, causing bleeding.
Platelet dysfunction is often caused by:
Drugs
Drugs that cause platelet dysfunction?
NSAIDs, IBU, Ometa 3 fatty acid, alcohol, abx
