Acquired brain injury (ABI): any damage to the brain that occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital or degenerative disease

open vs closed
- open: penetrating, blunt, crush injury
- closed: external force strong enough to move brain within the skull, countercoup
what is a concussion?
mild traumatic brain injury - brain is shaken in the skull
no parenchymal abnormalities on CT
s/s of a concussion
HA, drowsiness, dizziness, sensitivity to light, loss of memory, difficulty concentrating, feeling slowed down
consequences of aquired brain injury
- poor QOL
- cognitive impairment ➔ developmental delays
- caregiver burnout
- post-concussion syndrome (if not improved by 1M post injury)
- chronic traumatic encephalopathy: brain degeneration dt repeated head trauma ➔ increase risk for dementia
