What is rosacea?
Skin condition that affects the face, causing facial flushing and a rash over the nose, chin, cheeks and forehead
Which group of people are most likely to be affected by rosacea?
Women aged 30-40
What can trigger rosacea?
Alcohol
Stress
Spicy/hot food and drinks
What is the difference between acne and rosacea?
Rosacea doesn’t have excess sebum production or comodomes (white and blackheads)
What is the 1st line treatment for rosacea?
Topical metronidazole gel
What are 2nd and 3rd line treatments for rosacea?
+ doxycycline
+ isotretonin
Explain the pathophysiology behind acne?
increased sebum production during puberty leads to bacteria getting stuck and colonising in pilosebaceous ducts and causing inflammation
What can aggravate acne vulgaris?
PMS
Stress
Sweating
Endocrine disorders (PCOS)
How does acne vulgaris present?
Oily skin
whiteheads & blackheads (comodomes)
Pustules, papules & cysts (inflammatory lesions)
Distrubution: face, chest & upper back
How is acne vulgaris managed?
Topically: benzoyl peroxide, retinoid cream
Orally: antibiotics (doxy/lymecycline & erythromycin) retinoids (isotretonin)
