What is acne rosacea
long-term skin condition causing redness mainly on the face
Acne rosacea presentation
More common in women with lighter skin.
Recurrent erythema and flushing across cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.
May also have a burning or stinging sensation when using water or skincare products
Can get small pink or red bumps that may become filled with yellow liquid
Dry skin and swelling
Telangiectasia
Acne rosacea causes
Not known but some triggers may make it worse:
Alcohol, spicy foods, cheese, caffeine, hot drinks, aerobic exercise e.g. running
Acne rosacea differentials
Acne vulgaris (younger patient with comedones) Contact dermatitis (develops quickly) SLE (more rapid onset) Seborrheic dermatitis (yellow around eyebrows)
Acne rosacea complications
Conjunctivitis
Psychosocial impact
Keratitis (Inflammation of cornea) - painful eye, blurred vision, light sensitivity, red eye, gritty eye.
Acne rosacea treatment
Mild/moderate: Avoid known triggers - wear sunscreen, avoid heat/sunlight, gentle skincare products, avoid hot drinks and caffeine, avoid cheese and spicy food. Topical metronidazole Topical axelaic acid Ivermectin cream Severe: Oral tetracycline or erythromycin Refer if ocular involvement
