What causes acne?
Obstruction of pilosebaceous follicles with keratin plugs –> comedones, inflammation and pustules
Where does acne primarily occur?
Face, neck and upper trunk
What are the 3 classifications of acne?
Mild
Mod
Severe
What is mild acne?
Open and closed comedones +/- sparse inflammatory lesions
What is moderate acne?
Widespread non inflammatory lesions and numerous papule and pustules
What is severe acne?
Extensive inflammatory lesions, which may include nodules, pitting and scarring
What are the management steps for acne?
- simple topical therapy
- combination topical therapy
- oral antibiotics/OCP + benzoyl peroxide/retinoid
- oral isotretinoin
What simple topical agents are available for acne?
Topical retinoids
Benzoyl peroxide
What oral antibiotic is used in acne?
Often doxycycline
What are the side effects of roaccutane?
Teratogenic
Dry skin
Low mood
Photosensitivity
