Acids & Bases Flashcards
What can bases not contain?
C (carbon- CH3OH is an alcohol.)
What is an Arrhenius Acid?
They yield H+ as the only positive ion in aqueous solution.
What yields OH- as the only negative ion in aqueous solution? What is OH- anyway?
Arrhenius Bases. Hydroxide ion (Table E)
What is it called when an acid and base are added together? What does it produce?
neutralization. acid + base produces a salt + water
What is a salt?
an ionic compound (metal + nonmetal or has a polyatomic ion)
What is an electrolyte?
Electrolytes are substances that conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
What substances are electrolytes?
Acids, Bases, & Salts
Is CH3COOH an acid, base or salt?
Acid. Table K
What is the formula for an acid base titration?
MA x VA = MB x VB (table T)
What is an alternate theory (Bronsted-Lowry) Acid?
Bronsted-Lowry Acid is a proton (H+) donor
What is a proton (H+) acceptor?
alternate theory (Bronsted-Lowry) Base
What is H3O+ called and what is it the same as?
H3O+ is the hydronium ion (table E) and is the same as H+ it makes a solution acidic
What is pH? The pH scale must be between what 2 values?
pH= the H3O+ is hydronium ion (table E) and H+ hydrogen ion concentration. It must be between 0-14
What pH values are acidic, neutral, and basic?
Acidic less than 7. Neutral 7. Basic above 7.
what color is methyl orange at a pH of 2? pH of 5?
pH of 2 red. pH of 5 orange
