Acidosis vs. Alkalosis Flashcards
What increases/decreases in the blood during acidosis?
increased [H+], [CO2], decreased [O2]
What increases/decreases in the blood during alkalosis?
decreased [H+], [CO2], increased [O2]
What causes Respiratory Acidosis?
Decreased ventilation
What conditions can cause Respiratory Acidosis?
Holding breath and lung consolidation (pneumonia)
How does the body correct Respiratory Alkalosis?
Urinate NH4+ out (metabolic Alkalosis)
What causes Respiratory Alkalosis?
Increased ventilation
What condition causes Respiratory Alkalosis?
Hyperventilation, anxiety/panic attack, delivery breathing
How is Respiratory Alkalosis corrected in the body?
Bag over head and/or Excrete Bicarbonate (metabolic acidosis)
What is (NaCO3)?
Bicarbonate
What causes Metabolic Acidosis?
Non-lung acidosis (usually kidneys)
Which conditions cause Metabolic Acidosis?
Diarrhea (lose HCO3-), Diabetes mellitus: Ketoacidosis
How is Metabolic Acidosis corrected in the body?
Hyperventilation to blow off CO2, DM = smell of ketones (respiratory alkalosis)
What causes Metabolic Alkalosis?
Non-lung alkalosis (usually kidneys)
What conditions cause Metabolic Alkalosis?
Bulimia: loss of HCl, Diuretics: lose H+
How is metabolic Alkalosis corrected in the body?
Slow breathing (respiratory acidosis)
