Acid / Base DSA Flashcards
1
Q
Normal range for PaO2
A
80-100 mm Hg
2
Q
Normal range for PaCO2
A
35-45 mm Hg. Use 40 mm Hg
3
Q
Normal range for arterial pH (pHa)
A
7.35-7.45. Use 7.40 mm Hg
4
Q
Normal range for arterial bicarbonate (HCO3)
A
22-26 mEq/L. Use 24 mEq/L
5
Q
What can change the HCO3?
A
- ) The kidneys by kicking HCO3 into the urine or H+ into the urine
- ) The GI tract secretes a lot of HCO3 and H+. Vomiting and diarrhea can deplete HCO3
- ) Ingesting too many tums, become alkalotic
- ) Use up HCO3 by making acid (lactic acid, ketoacidosis)
These are all metabolic changes
6
Q
What happens to pHa if you increase HCO3?
A
Increase in pHa
7
Q
What happens to pHa if you decrease HCO3?
A
Decrease in pHa
8
Q
What does an increase in CO2 always lead to?
A
Acidosis
9
Q
What does a decrease in CO2 lead to?
A
Alkalosis
10
Q
Is a change in HCO3 metabolic or respiratory in nature?

Metabolic
