A
sudden onset injury resulting in rupture of achilles tendon
loss of connection between calf muscles (gastrocnemius + soleus) to the heel

risk factors
A
sports: basketball, tennis, track athletics inc age existing achilles tendinopathy FHx fluoroquinolone antibx systemic steroids

typical presentation
A
sudden onset pain
snapping sound + sensation

OE
A
ankle dorsiflexed tenderness palpable gap unable to stand on tiptoes weakness of plantar flexion \+ simmonds test

simmond’s calf squeeze test
A
normally squeeizng calf muscles will cause plantarflexion of ankle
if achilles tendon rupture, squeezing calf will not cause plantarflexion
lack of plantar flexion is positive result

rest + immobilisation
ice
