The concept of acculturation
The changes that cultural groups undergo when different cultures come into continuous first-hand contact, with subsequent changes in the original culture of either or both groups.
John Berry’s model of acculturation
Cultural Maintenance
The extend individuals value and wish to maintain their cultural identity
Contact Participation
The extent individuals value and seek out contact with those outside of their own group and wish to participate in the daily life of the larger society.
Bicultural identity integration
The degree to which a bicultural individual perceives his or her
two cultural identities as ’compatible’ versus ’oppositional’
Anxiety/Uncertainty Management
theory (AUM)
effective interpersonal and intercultural communication is a function of how individuals manage the anxiety and uncertainty they experience when communicating with others.
Uncertainty refers to individuals’ inability to predict and/or explain others’ feelings, attitudes and behaviour.
Anxiety is the affective equivalent of uncertainty.

Honeymoon stage
The initial stage of culture shock, it is characterized by the intense excitement associated with being somewhere different and unusual.

Retreat symtoms - Flight
Homesickness, regression, gather with people of your own kind.
Rejection of the host culture - Fight
Difficulty in identifying with the new culture or
forming friendships.
Example:
Disgust for national foods and drinks.
Distrust of national medical and dental services.
Suspicion that everybody is trying to cheat you or
is against you.
Rejection of self
Rejection of the home culture, social shame, irritation, angry, identity disorientation.
