AC7: Isomerism Flashcards
What is an isomer
Different compounds with the same molecular formula
What are structural isomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
In terms of physical and chemical properties, what are structural isomers usually like
- Different physical properties
- Different chemical properties
What are stereoisomers
They have the same structural formula, but their atoms are arranged differently in space
What are the 2 types of, stereoisomers
- E/Z isomers
- Optical isomers
When do E/Z isomers occur , 2 things
- Molecules has a C=C bond
- Have 2 different groups attached to each carbon in the C=C bond
What are optical isomers
Compounds whose molecules are non-superimposable mirror images
What needs to be attached to the chiral centre, in order for the compound to have optical isomers
4 different groups
What is the generic chiral centre
A carbon atom joined to 4 different groups
What’s a chiral compound
A compound capable of existing as a pair of optical isomers
In terms of physical and chemical properties, what are optical isomers like
- Same physical
- Same chemical
