what are the aims of punishment
retribution, rehabilitation, deterrence, public protection, reparation, denunciation
what does retribution do as an aim of punishment
- based on the idea that the offender deserves the punishment
- getting there just deserved
- doesn’t seek to alter future behaviour only punish
what does rehabilitation do as an aim of punishment
- aims to reform offenders so they do not reoffend
- e.g. community sentences, completing education courses
- allows the pronto remain a functioning member of society
what does deterrence do as an aim of punishment
individual deterrence
- its a punishment imposed specifically and directly on them to stop them from committing crime
- e.g. suspended prison sentence
general deterrence
- fear of punishment that prevents others from committing similar crimes
e.g. long prison sentences or harsh punishments
what does public protection do as a aim of punishment
- aims to protect the public from the offender
- curfews can be used as well as prison
what does reparation do as an aim of punishment
- involves compensating the victim
- offender may have to pay them money
- could also try and fix the relationship between offender and victim
what does denunciation do as an aim of punishment
- helps reinforce morals
- try’s to teach them new morals
