what does retribution do as an aim of punishment

A
  • based on the idea that the offender deserves the punishment
  • getting there just deserved
  • doesn’t seek to alter future behaviour only punish

what does rehabilitation do as an aim of punishment

A
  • aims to reform offenders so they do not reoffend
  • e.g. community sentences, completing education courses
  • allows the pronto remain a functioning member of society

what does deterrence do as an aim of punishment

A

individual deterrence
- its a punishment imposed specifically and directly on them to stop them from committing crime
- e.g. suspended prison sentence
general deterrence
- fear of punishment that prevents others from committing similar crimes
e.g. long prison sentences or harsh punishments

  • aims to protect the public from the offender
  • curfews can be used as well as prison

  • involves compensating the victim
  • offender may have to pay them money
  • could also try and fix the relationship between offender and victim
