does prison meet its aims of punishments
public protection- yes, keeping prisoners away safely stops them from harming anyone else.
retribution- yes, having them imprisoned gives them there just deserved
rehabilitation- no, 48%of people are reconvicted after a year, only punishes not rehabilitates. however it does heavily depend of the individual as some are more accepting of the rehabilitation.
deterrence- no, prison population has risen by 69% over the last 30 years.
do community sentences achieve there aims of punishment
rehabilitation -yes, they are 8.3% more effective at reducing 1 year reoffending rates. shown to be more effective than a short prison sentence.
denunciation- yes, it enforces more morals
retribution- yes and no some people may not see them as harsh enough but it does punish the offender
reparation- yes, as they are doing free labour they are paying back to there community.
deterrence- no, in 2013 3/4 people who went to prison previously had a community sentence so it shows they were not deterred by it.
do fines achieve there aims of punishment
deterrence- no, many fines are left unpaid or written off. according to the daily mirror 61% are written of.
reparation- yes if payed, they give back to the community but no if they are not payed.
retribution- no, majority of the fines are written of therefore no punishment is inflicted if this happens.
does discharge achieve its aims of punishment
deterrence- no, it is the lowest level of punishment that is given out and is rarely given so it does not deter well.
rehabilitation- depends on the person, it may help the person stay integrated into society as they wont be in prison.
