What is Imprisonment? (3 points)
- A legal penalty imposed by a court that involves imprisonment of an individual
- Involves a convicted person being sent to prison for a specified period of time
- Typically reserved for more serious offences, such as indictable offences - E.G. murder & rape
What is a Determinate Sentence? (1 point)
- Held in custody for a fixed length of time (E.G. 5 years)
What is an Indeterminate Sentence? (1 point)
- Does not have a fixed length of time. There is no set date for release
What is a Short-term sentence? (1 point)
- A determinate sentence lasting less than 12 months
What is a Whole Life Tariff? (1 point)
- The offender will never be released from prison, except in exceptional compassionate circumstances
What is a Suspended sentence? (2 point)
- Served in the community instead of prison
- Conditions are set, and if broken, the offender is immediately sent to prison
