AC 2.1 Explain Forms Of Social Control (External) Flashcards
how does external social control work
ensuring we conform to society’s expectations and keep to the rules, through agencies of social control like friends, family and law enforcements like the police
how do agencies of social control make us behave in certain ways
by rewarding us for ‘good behaviour’ and sanctioning is for ‘bad behaviour’
how does the police link to external social control
they have powers to stop, search, arrest and detain suspects which punishes for bad behaviour and corrects it too
what four agencies within the criminal justice system link to external social control
the police
the CPS
judges and magistrates
the prison service
what’s three forms of external social control
family
friends and peers
the education system
how is the family an external form of social control
we’re brought up with rules set by our parents and we might be punished for this; this teaches us to follow rules and be law abiding through fear of punishment etc
how is the education system an example of external social control
teachers may give our punishments like detentions to disruptive students, which reinforces good behaviour and condemns unacceptable behaviour
how do our friends and peers are an external form of social control
friends may stop being friends with someone if they behave in a way that goes against social norms/ values
define coercion
involves the use of a threat/force in order to make someone do something
what’s the two types of coercion
physical coercion
non-physical coercion
l what’s physical coercion
prisons use physical coercion as they can physically hold you against your will, can be seen as the death penalty etc
what’s non physical coercion
strikes, boycotts and non-cooperation
such as a suspected sentence is a good example of a threat as it can make you act a certain way
what are the two types of fear of punishments
individual deterrence
general deterrence
what’s individual deterrence
punishment for criminals to deter them from committing crimes, such as been given a community sentence so if we find an experience so bad it will stop us from
further crime
what’s general deterrence
dear if punishment prevents others from committing further crimes, such as seeing a lengthy crime or someone getting a fine it will deter others from commiting the same thing
