What is absolute monarchy?
Monarch controls ever aspect of government, economy, society, etc.
What is divine right?
Monarchs are given their power by God, to go against them is to go against God’s plan
Who was Louis XIV?
“Sun King”; made palace at Versailles; Absolute monarch who was one of the most powerful and long standing monarchs
What was Versailles?
Palace made by Louis as symbol of wealth and power, as well as a place for himself and other nobility
Who was Frederick the Great? What is he known for?
King of Prussia; fought the 7 Years War, War of Austrian succession, and took parts of Poland
Who was Peter the Great? What is he known for?
Russian Tsar who started Westernization in Russia
Who was Catherine the Great? What is she known for?
Tsar who continued Westernization in Russia, continued serfdom, and grew the Tsar’s power
Who was Oliver Cromwell?
Leader of the Roundheads/Parliament in English Civil War (defeated Cavaliers/Royalists)
What was the English Bill of Rights?
Gave Parliament more power, Allowed Parliament to be elected freely, Protected certain rights for all citizens
Who were the Puritans?
Christian group; persecuted in Great Britain, left to start new life in America
What is a Constitutional Government?
A government that has a Constitution (written social contract), usually democracy or republic, can still have monarch
