Organs in Right upper quadrant (5)
liver, gall bladder, right kidney, ascending colon, transverse colon
Organs in Left upper quadrant (6)
spleen, stomach, pancreas, left kidney, transverse colon, descending colon
Organs in right lower quadrant (5)
ascending colon, appendix, right ovary, right fallopian tube
Organs in left lower quadrant (4)
descending colon, sigmoid colon, left ovary, left fallopian tube
Umbilical Area
around navel, small bowel
Hypogastric Area
just above pubic bone, urinary bladder, uterus
Epigastric (4)
duodenum, liver, pancreas, stomach
Signs and symptoms of liver injury (3)
abdo pain, tenderness, rigidity
Signs and symptoms of spleen injury (1)
40% have none
Kehr’s sign- referred pain to left shoulder tip caused by splenic haematoma causing diaphragmatic irritation
Stomach injury
acidic gastric contents
Small and large intestine injury
signs and symptoms are associated with other injuries
can be injured in penetrating trauma, compressive forces of MVA, shearing forces assoc with deceleration
kidneys and ureters injury signs and symptoms (5)
gross haematuria, localised flank/abdo pain, palpable mass, tenderness to lower ribs upper L spine and flank, pain in groin shoulder back and flank
Pancreas and duodenum injury
injury to duodenum usually assoc with pancreatic trauma
Dissecting AAA
Aneurysm localised or diffuse enlargement of an artery
occurs when vessel wall becomes weakened by trauma, vascular disease or infection
Signs and symptoms of dissecting AAA (8)
acute onset pain in mid upper abdo, may radiate to back, chest pain and present like AMI, hypotension, tachycardia, shock, N and V, diaphoresis, pulsatile mass
