Abbreviations Flashcards
AFI
amniotic fluid index
- screening tool
- uses ultrasound
- measures vol of amniotic fluid -to assess fetal well being/placenta funx
AMA
advanced maternal age
AROM
amniotomy
-artificial rupture of membranes
BBOW
Bulging Bag of Water
- water between the amniotic sac around your baby and baby’s head
- When you have a contraction the baby’s head presses downwards and the bulging water sac can be seen on the outside of the vagina.
BTL
Bilateral Rubal Ligation
-surgical procedure that involves blocking the fallopian tubes to prevent the ovum (egg) from being fertilized
CVS
Chorionic Villus Sampling
- aspiratn of sml amt of placentl tisue (chorion)
- for chrmsml, mtblc, or DNA testing
EDC
Estimated Date of Confinement
-same as EDD
EFM
External Fetal Monitoring
-uses a device to listen to or record the fetal heartbeat through the mother’s abdomen
QBL
Quantitive Blood Loss
FHR
Fetal Heart Rate
- heard w doppler
- heard 10-12 wk
- norm range 110-160
FSE
Fetal Scalp Electrode
-spiral wire that can be placed on the scalp of the fetus to monitor their heart rate and ensure their well-being
GBS
Group B Streptococcus
- 25-33% of women carry in GI + uro tract - usually asymp
- infection in new born is invasive, severe, + has long term neuro sequelae
- 35-37 wks
- get abx before labor (ampicillin or penicillin)
HELLP syndrome
Hemolysis + Elevated Liver enzymes + Low Platelets
-variant changes in lab values that are complications of preeclampsia
IUGR
IntraUterine Growth Restrictions
- decreased rate of fetal growth
- usually due to decr in cell production r/t chronic malnutrtn
- 2 types (symmtrc/assym)
IUFD
IntraUterine Fetal Demise
- stillbirth used to describe the death of a baby in the uterus
- loss after 20 wk
LMP
Last Menstrual Period
-1st day of LMP is the start of prenatal period
NST
Non-Stress Test
- screening tool
- uses electronic fetal monitoring to assess well-being
PROM
Prolonged Rupture Of Membranes
-rupture of membrns longer than 24 hr
GHTN
Gestational HTN
- HTN first detected mid pregnancy w/o proteinuria
- dx is made postpartum
- relatively benign
- w/o underlying s/s
AGA
Appropriate for Gestational Age
AMNIO
Amniocentesis (testing amniotic fluid used to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections)
ANTE
Occurring before birth
BPP
BioPhysical Profile
-biologicl examinatn + chemcl determntn
