Q

instinctual drift is the phenomenon whereby established habits, learned using operant techniques, eventually are replaced by innate food-related behaviors. So the learned behavior “drifts” to the organism’s species-specific (instinctual) behavior.

A

Instinctive drift is the tendency of an animal to revert to instinctive behaviors that interfere with a conditioned response.

Q

proximal stimulus is the stimulus registered by the sensory receptors

A

Proximal=what you actually perceive . Distal=What is causing the stimulus.

Distal stimulus is the actual object, such as a picture, or tree, person, etc

Proximal stimulus is what the distal stimulus is giving that you can sense–light stimuli, auditory stimuli, etc. it’s the component that must be sensed by your sensory receptors.

I believe distal is the actual thing in real life and proximal is what comes into your eye and is “flipped”

Q

psychophysical testing methods

A

directly assess our perception of stimuli in relation to their true physical properties. The nature of the illusions discussed in the passage suggests that individuals would be prone to either over- or under-state the size of items

Q

incentive theory of motivation calls attention to how factors outside of individuals, including community values and other aspects of culture, can motivate behavior

A

Incentive theory argues that behavior is primarily extrinsically motivated: people are more motivated to perform activities if they receive a reward afterward, rather than simply because they enjoy the activities themselves.
