What is self-efficacy?
Belief in one’s ability to perform a task successfully.
What can self-efficacy influence?
Self-efficacy can influence our belief in how successful we think we will be.
What does high self efficacy lead to?
A stronger belief that you will complete a task, more motivation.
What does low self-efficacy lead to?
Avoiding tasks that you believe you cannot do, you will fail.
What are the four influences over self-efficacy?
Vicarious reinforcement
Social Persuasion
Emotional States
Mastery experiences
What is mastery experience?
Experience of performing a task successfully, becoming more confident as we have more practice.
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Observing a role model performing a task, if successful you will be hopeful doing it.
What is social persuasion?
Encouragement from others, which could be negative or positive, has an impact on our self-efficacy.
What is an emotional state?
Self-efficacy is influenced by the person’s emotional state, which can reduce or increase self-efficacy.
Strength of the self-efficacy model?
The theory has supporting research for understanding addictive behaviours.
Weakness for self-efficacy model?
It is difficult to measure and define the concept of self-efficacy.
