What is the Health Belief Model?
A theory that explains why people do or don’t engage in behaviours related to their beliefs.
What is percieved seriousness?
Someone’s belief in how serious they think a consequence is if they do or don’t engage in a behaviour.
What is percieved susceptibility?
Subjective perception of getting an illness or disease.
What is percieved benefit?
One’s perception of the effectiveness of the actions taken to reduce an illness.
What are percieved barriers?
One’s feelings on the obstacles when recommended health action.
What is an internal cue?
Something that happens to that person. e.g. coughing.
What is an external cue?
Something that occurs to someone outside of your body. e.g someone dying due to smoking.
What is a strength to the HBM?
There are practical applications for the theory.
What is a weakness to the HBM?
Alternative models have been proposed that may explain health behaviour.
