A1.1 Water Flashcards
what type of bonds exist within water molecules? why? DRAW IT
polar covalent bonds
this is due to unequal sharing of electrons
what type of bonds exist between water molecules? why?
hydrogen bonds
due to Oxygen’s slightly (-) charge and Hydrogen’s slightly (+) charge
cohesion
the ability of water molecules to stick to one another through hydrogen bonds
adhesion
the ability of water to stick to other polar or charged materials
What are the benefits of cohesion?
cohesion allows water to get transorted in plant’s xylem and it’s surface to be used as a habitate
How do plants use adhesion?
capillary action in soil and in plant cell walls
Solvent properties of water
hydrophilic molecules dissolve in water (e.x.glucose, ions, proteins), most enzymes catalyze reactions in aqueous solutions
Buoyancy
an upward force excerted on an object placed in the medium (equal to the weight of the displaced matter) (air<water)
Viscosity
the resistance of an object moving through something (air<water)
Thermal Conductivity
the ability of a substance to transfer heat (air<water)
Specific Heat Capasity
how much heat is needed to heat a substance with 1C for 1 gram
How did water come to Earth?
with asteroids
An area of, not too strong, not too weak, gravity with, not too hot, not to cold, temperature, where water can allow life.
Goldilock’s Zone
