Doctors and specialist doctors?

A

(Healthcare professions)
1. GP doctors can refer the service user to specialist doctors (such as in the hospital) so that they receive specific specialist health care for their individual needs.
2. Perform assessments to diagnose any health problems to identify any health needs, physical and mental needs are met, and consider further actions to ensure care is provided.
3. To prescribe medication so individual needs are met and and they receive the support they need.
4. Doctors needs to work as part of a multidisciplinary team so that they meet the holistic needs of service users.

What are the roles and responsibilities of:
Nurses and specialist nurses?

A

1. Monitor the health of patients by taking blood tests and doing routine investigations so they meet the physical needs of the patient.
2. Nurses observe the condition of the patients so they support the physical needs of the patient.
3. Nurses prepare patients for operations so that they are fully informed about their operation and are ready for it.
4. Nurses support the recovery and rehabilitation of patients so that their physical and mental needs are met and they are ready to be independent.

Midwives?

A

1. Midwives monitor women during pregnancy so that the wellbeing of the mother and baby are monitored and maintained.
2. Midwives can provide advice for women so that they are fully informed and supported during childbirth.
3. Midwives support women during labour and provide guidance and pain management so that the mother is fully cared for and supported during labour.
4. Midwives work with mothers during the early postnatal period by monitoring, provide screening tests for the baby and provide advice so that the mother and baby’s holistic wellbeing is cared for and supported.

Occupational therapists

A

1. Carry out an initial assessment of needs and abilities so to identify appropriate support that is needed.
2. Gives advice on home, work, etc., adaptations such as adjustments for wheelchair access or handrails at their workplace or home.
3. They find ways for service users to carry out personal care to increase personal independence.
4. Advises or teach how to do tasks differently such as cooking using specialist equipment so that they can be more independent.

Healthcare assistants

A

1. Provide personal care such as bathing, toileting and more so to support physical health and support hygiene.
2. Help to monitor health such as check temperature and weigh patients to support physical health.
3. Check that basic needs are being met such as helping to feed and wash service users to support their physical health and hygiene.
4. Raise confidence and self-esteem by talking and listening to them and support their emotional needs.

What are the roles and responsibilities of:
Advocates

A

(Health AND social care professional)
1. Speak to other professional so that the service user understands the care and support process and what is being offered.
2. Communicate on the service user’s behalf so that they stand up for their rights.
3. Make sure health and social care services follow correct procedures by challenging any decisions about the service user’s case that they do not think is right so the service user is kept safe and all their needs are met.
4. Find information for the service user so that they are fully supported and if she or he does not agree with decisions made about their case.

Care managers

A

1. Have regular meetings with staff so that they are monitored and can have feedback to improve services.
2. Regularly update all policies such as complaint policy so that the service meets current legislation requirements.
3. Carry out risk assessments on the service/setting so that all staff and service users are safe and the settings meets current legislations such as Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
4. Supervises care assistants so that they are monitored and provide good service.

Social workers

A

1. Social workers carry out an assessment of needs of families so that they can identify the support they need to meet their needs.
2. Social workers are involved in the Care Planning Cycle, working in a multidisciplinary team to allow a holistic approach to care.
3. Can arrange respite care for an informal carer so to give them a break and help them maintain their wellbeing.
4. Social workers can refer families to Support Groups or Charities so they have more information and support for their needs.

Youth workers

A

1. Youth workers act as a mentor for young people so that they can support a young person’s wellbeing and this can be done by supporting and guiding them to make the right decisions.
2. Youth workers can offer advice to young people so that young people can gain information such as sexual health or applying for a job.
3. Youth workers can develop projects for young people such as in schools or clubs so that they can gain the right ‘life skills’ to become confident that they have the right belief and skills to live in society.

2. Support workers carry out the care plan agreed with social workers so that the service user has all their individual needs met.

2. They carry out general household tasks such as cleaning the house and house chores as well as allowing the service user to help out so that they maintain their independence.
3. Takes the service user out to the shops or GP so that they maintain their independence and their needs are being met.
4. Takes the service user out to socialise so that they maintain their social wellbeing.
