A02 cognitive approach to psychopathology Flashcards
What are the 3 sections for the limitations of the cognitive approach to psychopathology
Blames the patient rather than the situational factors
Consequence rather than cause
Irrational beliefs may be realistic
Talk about blames the patient rather than the situational factors
It blames the patient for the mental disorder (their faulty thinjing) rather than consider other factors such as lid events or family problems
It’s also unethical to just assume such stuff
Talk about consequence rather than cause
Do faulty thinking cause mental disorder ir do disorders cause faulty thinking. There isn’t enough evidence to prove faulty thinking causes mental disorders
irrational beliefs may be realistic
Who tested it and what did they find say?
Alloy and abrahamson
Found that depressed people gave more accurate estimates of the likelihood of a disaster than normal control.
This is the sadder but wiser effect
Conclusion for irrational beliefs may be realistic
Can’t assume that they lead to mental disorders cz they can be realistic and who determines whether they are irrational ir not if they have been proven to be realistic?
