a01 the behavioural approach to psychology Flashcards
What are the 3 sections for the outline of approach
Only behaviour is important
Abnormal behaviours are learned through conditioning or social learning
Learning environments
Talk about only behaviour is important
The model concentrates only on behaviour
Behaviour might be internal or external
Cz external behaviours are generally more aggressive behaviourists tend to focus more on external behaviours
Talk about abnormal behaviours are learned through conditioning or social learning
Abnormal behaviour not different to normal behaviours in terms of how it is learnt
We can use the theories of classical and operant conditioning to explain many disorders for which the major characteristics are behavioural
Talk about learning environments
Learning environments may reinforce problematic behaviours
Avoidance behaviour lowers anxiety
Depressive behaviours may elicit help from others
E.g. A child may take up drugs if they judge that by engaging in such behaviour they will be rewarded e.g. social approval
Also case with people faring flight cz of tv programmes
Role of operant conditioning
Learning as a result of the consequences of behaviour
Role of classical conditioning
Learning as a result of association
Social kearning
Learning as a result of observation of others behaviour
Methods of investigating the behavioural approach
Experiments
Animal studies
Talk about animal studies
They’re used to generalise to human behaviour.
But this can be a limitation cz it may not be accurate enough
Basic laws of learning apply to humans and non human animals
Talk about experiments
Experiments are easily done cz the focus is on observable behaviours, this can demonstrate the importance of consequences
