A01 cognitive approach to psychopathology Flashcards
What are the 2 section so that won’t line of approach
Abnormality is caused by faulty thinking
The individual is in control
Talk about abnormality is caused by faulty thinking
Model assumes that cognitions direct behaviour. Therefore, mental illness is the result of inappropriate or disordered thinking
The focus isn’t on the problem itself but the way the person thinks about it
Who came up with the ABC model for abnormality is caused by faulty thinking
Ellis
Talk about ABC model
A =activating agent (seeing a large dog)
B= the irrational or rational belief (dog is harmless, dog is harmful)
C=consequence. Rational beliefs lead ti healthy emotions (amusement ir indifference), whereas irrational beliefs lead to unhealthy emotions (fear and panic)
Tall about the individual is in control
Model programs indv as cause if their own behaviour cz the indv controls their own though. Therefore, according to model, abnormality is the product of faulty control.
What are the methods of investigating the cognitive approach
Experiments
Meta analysis
Talk about experiments who tested it
Thase et al
Compared ct with antidepressant medication in treatment of depression
Ct wasn’t any less effective
Shows that depression is at least in part a disorder of faulty thinking
Talk about Meta analysis
Who tested it
Smith and glass
Meta analysis
Found ct as having the second highest average success rate among 10 different forms of psychotherapy. Shows role of rail ty thinking and effectiveness of ct
