A&P Chapter 5 Test Flashcards
What is a tissue?
Group of cells working together to perform a specific function
What is “Histology?”
The study of tissues
What are some general characteristics/functions of epithelial tissues?
Cover and protect other tissues. They lack blood vessels, cover body surface, and cover/line internal organs.
Three shapes of epithelial tissues
Squamous, Columnar, Cuboidal
Location, structure, function of squamous epithelial tissues.
-Found in the inner mouth, blood vessels, and esophagus.
-Thin, small, flat cells.
-Selective transport of substances
Location, structure, function of Columnar epithelial tissues
-Found in the inner surface of intestine and alimentary canal
- Column like cells that have folds for absorption
- Secretion of digestive juice and absorption of nutrients.
Location, structure, function of Cuboidal epithelial tissues
- Found in tubules of kidneys and the salivary gland
- Cuboidal
- Reabsorption of useful materials from urine and the secretion of saliva.
What does simple mean
What does stratified mean
Collagen fibers
They are very strong so they hold body parts together
Elastic fibers
Weak and easily stretched and found in stretchy body parts
General characteristics and functions of connective tissues
They bind other , provide together and support, have good blood supply, store fat, and fill spaces
WHat is the unique function of adipose tissue
Adipose tissue contains fat droplets that form when cells overcrowd other cells.
How do cartilage and bone differ
Bone has good blood supply causing rapid healing, while cartilage takes longer to heal because it doesn’t have good blood supply.
Major components of blood
Contains plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet
General characteristics/functions of muscular tissue
Contraction. They are able to generate force and have elongated cells that can shorten or thicken
What are the three muscular tissues
Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
Function and location of skeletal muscle
It is VOLUNTARY and muscles attached to bones
Function and location of smooth muscle
INVOLUNTARY and in walls of hollow organs
Function and location of cardiac muscle
contraction for heart beats and found the heart muscle
What are the general characteristics and function of Nervous tissue
Found in the brain, spinal cords, and nerves to coordinate and control body activities
What are the two major cells that make up the nervous tissues
Neurons and Neroglia
Neurons
They receive and send information throughout the body and coordinate, regulate, and integrate most of the body
Which type of muscle tissue lacks striations
Smooth
Exocrine gland
Glands that secrete their products into ducts that open onto the surface, such as skin or lining of digestive tract
Endocrine gland
Glands that secretes their products into tissue fluid or blood
Serous Fluid
Known for lubricating and lining cavities that don’t open to the surface.
Mucus membranes
Lnes cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body
Loose Connective Tissues vs. Dense Connective Tissues
Loose: loose arrangement of protein fibers that are not tightly bound together
Dense: consists of closely, packed, thick collagen fibers.
Synovial membranes
Lines the inside of some of your joints
Cutaneous membranes
