*A&P 1 Unit 9 (Lab) [Articulations] Flashcards
Synovial Fluid
Similar in compostion to blood plasma without the proteins. Bathes the joint to permit frictionless motion.
Joint Capsule
Made of dense irregular collagenous connective tissue and provides strength ans structural reinforcement for the joint. It is lined by the synovial membrane.
Articular Cartilage
The articulating ends of the bones are covered with articular cartilage, usually hyaline cartilage. The cartilage provides a smooth, nearly frictionless surface for articulation.
Ligaments
The bones in the synovial joint are held together by ligaments that further reinforce the joint.
The knee joint is a… (Structurally)
Synovial Joint because is has a true joint cavity and consist of two bones whose articular ends are covered with hyaline cartilage.
The knee joint is a… (Functionally)
Diarthroses because it is a freely movable joint.
Fibrous joint
Consist of bons joined by short connective tissue fibers. Most allow no motion.
Cartilaginous Joint
Consist of bones united by cartilage rather than fibrous connective tissue. Most cartilaginous joints allow some motion.
Synarthroses
Immovable joints
Amphiarthroses
Joints that allow some motion
What is the purpose of the Menisci of the Knee?
For stabilization
What undesirable movement does the ACL prevent?
To prevent hyperextension of the knee.
What undesirable movement does the PCL prevent?
Prevents posterior displacement of the tibia on the femur.
