Nya’s five-year-old sister whom Nya teaches to fetch water. She, too, must take on the responsibility of helping her family. She becomes ill from drinking contaminated water. Nya and her mother travel with a weakened Akeer several days to a health clinic where they obtain life-saving medicine for her.

What is the relationship between Dinka vs. Nuer?
The Dinkas have been fighting against the rival Nuer tribe for hundreds of years. They fight over the land with the most water.
Why is it that Nuer and the Dinka fight?
Because of the land and resources
What are some of the effects of Dinka vs. Nuer?
The Effects of Dinka vs. Nuer are the cause of being enemies, and causing war; the fight also caused uncle to die
Rebels vs. the Government
The rebels and the government are at odds because to form a new state, South Sudan, due to religious suppression. The majority of Sudan is Muslim, while South Sudan is primarily Christian. The rebels believe that independence is necessary to practice their faith freely.
Salva vs. Himself
Salva struggles with the loss of his family; he is fighting through fear, sadness, worry, etc.
Salva (and all those walking) vs. nature
Nature puts higher risk in starvation, thirst, and a bigger risk in danger
What does water symbolize?
Survival and precarious existence, the balance between life and death, between surviving or not.
What does walking symbolize?
Daily struggle and determination of Nya and Salva. If either stopped walking, they would succumb to life’s hardships. Nya walks to the pond, the lake, and the health clinic to survive.
What does thorns symbolize?
Adversity and pain that is a constant part of Nya’s life. Nya tries to avoid the thorns, but they are unavoidable, as are the many hardships that are a part of her daily existence.
What does The Nile symbolize?
Life and Survival; The Nile River is a crucial source of water and sustenance for the people living in South Sudan. It symbolizes the basic necessity of life and the struggle for survival in a harsh and arid environment. Nya and Salva, rely on the river to meet their daily needs and to overcome the challenges they face.
