What are the Levels of Organization in the human body?
Cells
Tissues
Organs
Organ Systems
Organism (The Human Body)
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells that perform the same function.
What is nerve tissue and what does it do?
Nerve tissue carries messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.
What are the three types of muscle tissue and their functions?
Skeletal Muscle – moves the skeleton/bones
Smooth Muscle – moves food through the digestive system
Cardiac Muscle – moves the heart
All muscle tissues move!
What is connective tissue and what does it do?
Connective tissue connects the body. Examples include bone, fat, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and blood.
What is epithelial tissue and what does it do?
Epithelial tissue is skin tissue that covers the inside and outside of the body.
What is an organ?
An organ is a structure in the body that is composed of different kinds of tissue.
Give examples of organs.
Examples of organs include the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, skin, brain, bones, and stomach.
What is an organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform a specific function in the body.
What are the four types of tissue found in the heart?
The heart contains muscle, nerve, connective, and epithelial tissue.
What does the skeletal system do?
The skeletal system supports the body, protects certain organs, and works with muscles to allow movement. BONES
What does the muscular system do?
The muscular system enables the body to move with skeletal bones, moves food through the digestive system, and keeps the heart beating. MUSCLES
What does the integumentary system do?
The integumentary system protects the body outside and lines many of the organs. It includes the skin. SKIN
What does the digestive system do?
The digestive system takes food into the body, breaks it down into smaller molecules, absorbs nutrients, and excretes solid waste. STOMACH/SMALL INTESTINE
What does the circulatory system do?
The circulatory system carries oxygen and other needed materials around the body and removes waste materials like carbon dioxide away from cells. It also helps fight disease. HEART
What does the respiratory system do?
The respiratory system takes in oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide. LUNGS
What does the urinary system do?
The urinary system removes liquid waste (urine) from the body. KIDNEYS/BLADDER
What does the nervous system do?
The nervous system detects and interprets information from the environment inside and outside the body, and it includes the five senses. BRAIN
What does the endocrine system do?
The endocrine system consists of glands that send chemicals (hormones) to control body processes such as growth and reproduction. HORMONES
What does the reproductive system do?
The reproductive system produces sex cells that can create offspring when mated with other sex cells. In males, the testes produce sperm; in females, the ovaries produce eggs.
What is the immune system?
The immune system fights diseases with white blood cells and is connected to the circulatory system. WHITE BLOOD CELLS aka Lymphatic System.
What is the excretory system?
Excrete means to get rid of wastes.
Wastes in the body are as follows:
Perspiration - excreted through the skin
Carbon Dioxide – excreted through the lungs
Liquid Urine – excreted through the kidneys
Solid Feces – excreted through the large intestine/colon.
