The Mongol Empire attempted two major invasions of Vietnam, but both were ultimately unsuccessful. The first attempt was made by Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, in 1257. The Vietnamese, under the leadership of the Tran dynasty, successfully repelled the Mongol forces, employing effective military tactics and taking advantage of their knowledge of the local terrain.
Second Mongol Invasion (1284)
The second Mongol invasion occurred in 1284, during the reign of the Tran dynasty’s last king, Tran Anh Ton. Once again, the Vietnamese forces managed to resist the Mongol invasion, inflicting heavy losses on the Mongol army in the famous battle of Bạch Đằng.
Battle of Bach Dang (1284)
Vietnamese forces under Emperor Tran Anh Ton defeated the Mongols by employing a strategy involving a series of defensive spikes placed in the river, which crippled the Mongol fleet as the tide went out, leading to a decisive victory for the Vietnamese.
