When there was a strong wind, the pine trees made a ‘sad’, ‘eerie’ noise which kept people on the main road. Mr. Oliver was not a nervous or imaginative man so this did not affect him.
Why did Mr. Oliver call the boy a miscreant?
He called the boy a miscreant because the boy was out after dark even though boys were not supposed to be out after dark.
What happened as Mr. Oliver approached the boy?
As he approached the boy, Mr. Oliver sensed that something was wrong. The boy appeared to be crying. His head hung down, he held his face in his hands and his body shook convulsively. It was a strange, soundless weeping and Mr. Oliver felt uneasy.

The boy’s face had no eyes, ears, nose or mouth. it was just a round smooth head with a school cap on top of it.

The torch that Mr. Oliver held fell from his trembling hand. He turned and scrambled down the path, running blindly towards the school buildings

In the middle of the path, he stumbled across the watchman, grasping for breath.
