Taoiseach Jack lynch moved army units to the border and set up refugee camps for those fleeing the violence
These events caused the arrival of British troops. This is referred to the start of the troubles.
What was the British response to the security situation in august 1969
British troops were sent to the streets of Londonderry and Belfast. Nationalist welcomed them as they felt it was better protection than the RUC

Acted as a central council for loyalist groups. Aimed at filling hole in defences for loyalists
It was seen as a defensive grouping against republican aggression.
Within 1 year it had 30,000 members so the government saw it as too big to ban
