A. 4) Protein Terminology Flashcards
primary structure
sequence of aa of polypeptide. this order is encoded in the gene
secondary stucture
refers to localized folding eg alpha and beta sheets
tertiary structure
refers to completef olding of one polypeptide
Quaternary strucuture
refers to proteins that are formed from more than one polypeptide. each polypeptide is a subunit, may be held together by disulphide bonds
protein domain
a part of the protein that has its own tertiary structure and is covalently bonded to the rest of the protein
protein family (not to be defined)
proteins that are evolutionary related. although these proteins no longer have primary structure, they retain secondary and tertiary strucuture
Ig superfamily
evolved from a gene encoding a single domain. gene was duplicated and even multiple copies combined to encode proteins w/multiple domains. the genes encoding the member of the Ig superfamily then evolved independently resulting in proteins with diff fns
