9F - Reactivity Flashcards
What is an implosion?
An object breaking down inwards. It collapses into itself.
What triggers an implosion?
The forces like pressure, gravity or an explosion that starts the process.
What is an explosion?
It is generally a chemical reaction where an object breaks down outwards.
What is released in a chemical reaction?
Heat
Light
Pressure
Gases
What are exception that are not explosions?
Eruptions
Why are eruptions an exception of a chemical reation?
They are physical changes.
What is a Physical change?
Reversible
Do not create new substance
Properties don’t change
What is a chemical change?
Not easily reversible
Creates new substance
Rearranges atoms into new combinations
Properties change
Gases may be produced
Could change
Ph
Colour
Smell
Taste
Examples of Physical Changes?
Mixing things
Dissolving things
State of matter changes
Examples of Chemical changes?
Burning
Cooking
Roasting
Fermentation
Oxidation
What happens in a chemical reaction?
Atoms in the reactants are rearranges to from new products. The new products have different properties.
What do the smaller subscript numbers represent in a chemical formula?
They tell us how many atoms of that element are in the compound.
What is a formula?
A fixed ration of elements in a compound.
What is reactivity?
A chemical property of a substance.
The ability to participate in a chemical reaction.
What is an example of reactivity?
Precious metals that do not react with most substance because they have low reactivity.
