9.8 Continued Flashcards
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
Combined hinge and plane joint.
Only freely moveable joint between skull bones (except for ossicles).
Articular disc
Fibrocartilage that separates the synovial cavity into superior and inferior compartments, each with a synovial membrane
Articular capsule
Thin fairly loose envelope around the circumference of the joint
Lateral ligament
Two short bands on the lateral surface of the Articular capsule.
In between the mandible, zygomatic, and temporal bone
Sphenomandibular ligament
Thin band that extends inferiorly and anteriorly from the spine of the sphenoid bone to the mandible.
Stylomandibular ligament
Thickened band of deep cervical fascia that extends from the styloid of temporal bone to ramus of mandible.
Separates parotid gland from submandibular gland and limits movement of mandible at TMJ.
