94 WJEC Biology AS Level - Marianne Izen - 2nd Edition (Nucleic Acids And Their Functions) Flashcards
What does DNA contain?
DNA contains the information about an organism, in the form of a genetic code.
Where is the genetic code contained?
What does the genetic code determine?
This code is contained in the nucleus of the cells of that organism and determines its inherited characteristics.
Why must the genetic code be copied accurately?
The genetic code must be copied accurately, so that whenever the nucleus of a cell divides, it can pass on an exact copy to the nuclei of the daughter cells.
What major functions does DNA perform?
DNA performs two major functions:
- it replicates in cells just before they divide
- it carries the information for protein synthesis.
What has essential role in the functions that DNA performs?
RNA molecules have essential roles in these two functions.
