What is the significance of Dengue?
It is the commonest human arbovirus infection - killing 25,000 per year
Where are the countries at risk of Dengue found?
In the central belt of the world:
1. South America
2. Africa
3. South Asia
How is Dengue transmitted?
Via Mosquitoes
What is the Clinical Presentation of Dengue?
- Sudden Fever
- Severe Headahces with Retro-Orbital Pain
- Sever Myalgia and Arthalgia
- Macular / Malculopapular Rash
- Haemorrhagic Signs (Petechiae, Purpura, Positive Tourniquet Test)
How is Dengue Diagnosed?
Clinically:
1. Thrombocytopenia
2. Leucopenia
3. Elevated Transaminases
4. Positive Tourniquet Test
Laboratory:
1. PCR
2. Serology
How is Dengue managed?
No Specific Therapeutic Agents - only complications managed, and prevention methods
What are the complications of Dengue?
- Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever
- Dengue Shock Syndrome
How are the complications of Dengue treated?
- I.V. fluids
- Fresh Frozen Plasma
- Platelets
What are the prevention methods against getting Dengue?
- Avoid Bites (Bed Nets, Avoid Still Water)
- New Vaccine (Dengavaxia) - limited use
