What are Bursae?
Small, Sac-like cavities which contain fluid and are linked by Synovial Membrane
Where are Bursae located?
Subcutaneously, between Bony Prominence’s or Tendons
What are the function of Bursae?
Facilitate Movement with Reduced Friction
What are the most common sites of Septic Bursitis?
- Patellar
- Olecranon
Where does Septic Bursitis infection often come from?
Adjacent Skin infection
What are the predisposing factors of Septic Bursitis?
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Alcoholism
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Intravenous Drug Abuse
- Immunosuppression
- Renal Insufficiency
What are the signs/symptoms of Septic Bursitis?
- Peribursal Cellulitis (Swelling and Warmth are common)
- Fever
- Pain on movement
What is the diagnosis of Septic Bursitis based on?
Aspiration of the fluid
What is the most common causative organism of Septic Bursitis?
Staphylococcus Aureus
Other than Staphylococcus Aureus, what organisms can cause Septic Bursitis?
- Gram Negatives
- Mycobacteria
- Brucella
What is the treatment of Septic Bursitis?
Antibiotics
